Affordable fashion hits Austell just in time for holiday shopping AJWright plans to open its doors in East West Commons this week. AJWright is a leading off-price retailer that offers great deals on quality brand-name family apparel and footwear, accessories, home essentials, giftware, toys and more, all at up to 70 percent off discount and chain store prices. Beginning Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 8:00 a.m., AJWright will open its doors to offer the community a new destination for holiday shopping. With one of the biggest retail shopping days right around the corner, AJWright is the go-to retailer for Black Friday deals in the Atlanta market. Austell marks the seventh location in greater Atlanta. The grand opening will feature an added bonus for early shoppers. The celebration will continue with an open casting call for aspiring AJWright models on Nov. 14, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “AJWright has a fantastic mix of licensed holiday gifts and outerwear for this time of year,” said Kathy Clair, AJWright assistant vice president of marketing. “At any given moment our customers can come in and find name brands at great prices. The merchandise mix changes weekly.” Regular store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. AJWright will remain open until 10:00 p.m. Thursday to accommodate grand opening shoppers. In addition to creating more than 50 new jobs in Austell, AJWright has partnered with A.W. “Tony” Matthews Boys & Girls Club to support much-needed neighborhood programs. Grand opening festivities kick off Thursday at 7:45 a.m. with a special donation and presentation to the Boys & Girls Club. A representative from the Boys & Girls Club, as well as local dignitaries, will be present as AJWright makes a donation to the organization. AJWright supports the Boys & Girls Clubs of America on a corporate level with several programs throughout the year. “With the upcoming holidays, we appreciate the support of AJWright,” said Theodore Bullard, program director of A.W. “Tony” Matthews Boys & Girls Club. “These funds will be used to support links of london bracelet and our programs even through the new year.” The celebration will continue after grand opening day with a contest to find the next face of AJWright. Macy’s, Inc. reported improved third quarter results that exceeded the company’s expectations for same-store sales, gross margin, earnings and cash flow. “Given the difficult economic climate, we had an excellent quarter. Our business improved progressively each month during the period and we are entering the holiday selling season confident in our locally-focused organizational structure and the high caliber of our talent,” said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy’s, Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer. Macy’s, Inc. lost 8 cents per diluted share for the third quarter of 2009, ended Oct. 31, 2009. This compares with a loss of 10 cents per share in the same period last year. Excluding restructuring costs, the company lost 3 cents per diluted share in the third quarter of 2009 compared with a loss of 8 cents per share in the same period in 2008. In the third quarter of 2009, restructuring charges were $33 million ($23 million after tax; 5 cents per share) related to division consolidations and localization initiatives announced in February 2009 that were designed to reduce costs and make the company more locally responsive to customers. In the third quarter of 2008, restructuring charges related to division consolidations and localization initiatives announced in 2008 were $16 million ($10 million after tax; 2 cents per diluted share). “We continue to see encouraging results from our My Macy’s approach to local markets. Of our Top 10 districts in same-store sales in the third quarter, seven were among the original My Macy’s pilot districts,” Lundgren said. “Other bright spots in the third quarter included a strong sales performance at Bloomingdale’s and outstanding growth in our Internet businesses, which are being fueled by the ongoing multi-channel integration at both Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.” For the first three quarters of 2009, Macy’s, Inc. reported a loss of 27 cents per diluted share, compared with a loss of 7 cents per diluted share in the same period in 2008. Excluding restructuring-related costs of $205 million ($120 million after tax; 28 cents per diluted share), earnings were 1 cent per diluted share in 2009 to date. In the first three quarters of 2008, diluted earnings per share were 20 cents, excluding restructuring-related costs of $129 million ($81 million after tax; 19 cents per diluted share) and asset impairment charges of $50 million ($31 million after tax; 8 cents per diluted share). NIKE Inc announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 third quarter ended February 28, 2009. Revenue decreased 2 percent to $4.4 billion, compared to $4.5 billion for the same period last year. Excluding changes in currency exchange rates, revenue would have increased 2 percent. Third quarter net income was $243.8 million or $0.50 per diluted share, compared to $463.8 million or $0.92 per diluted share in the same period last year. Excluding a $240.7 million, after-tax non-cash charge related to the impairment of goodwill, intangible and other assets of the Company’s Umbro subsidiary, third quarter net income would have increased 4 percent to $484.5 million and diluted earnings per share would have increased 8 percent to $0.99. “Today’s results say a lot about the strength and diversity of Nike, Inc. In a challenging environment, we delivered excellent operating results by executing with both focus and flexibility,” said Mark Parker, President and CEO of Nike, Inc. “I feel very good about our performance and our potential. Going forward we’ll continue to stay close to the consumer, drive innovation into the marketplace, and operate with financial discipline by making the right decisions to restructure our organization for the future. The Nike, Inc. portfolio of brands is a diverse and competitive asset. We’ll continue to leverage all aspects of it to deliver consistent, long-term shareholder value.”Futures OrdersThe Company reported worldwide futures orders for Nike brand athletic footwear and apparel, scheduled for delivery from March 2009 through July 2009, totaling $6.5 billion, 10 percent lower than such orders reported for the same period last year. Excluding the effect of changes in currency exchange rates, reported orders would have declined 2 percent.By region, futures orders for the U.S. were down 1 percent; EMEA (which includes Europe, the Middle East and Africa) decreased 25 percent; Asia Pacific declined 1 percent and the Americas were down 4 percent. Excluding changes in currency exchange rates futures orders in EMEA would have declined 9 percent, increased 2 percent in Asia Pacific; and increased 22 percent in the Americas region. Non-Cash Impairment ChargeIn the third quarter the Company recorded a $401.3 million pre-tax non-cash impairment charge to reduce the carrying value of Umbro’s goodwill, intangible and other assets. On an after-tax basis, the charge totaled $240.7 million, which decreased diluted earnings per share by $0.49. The impairment charge is a result of both the deteriorating global consumer markets, particularly in the United Kingdom, Umbro’s primary market, and reflects management’s decision to adjust planned investment in the Brand. In addition, the deterioration of the financial markets has reduced both the present value of future sweetie bracelets cash flows and the market value of comparable businesses. While management continues to view Umbro as a compelling, complementary brand within the NIKE, Inc. portfolio, it was concluded the fair value of its Umbro investment has declined as forecasted profits and cash flows have fallen below amounts originally projected at the date of acquisition.
